But don’t panic. Computer vision syndrome is common, treatable, and not considered to be permanent. There are many things you can do to help alleviate the symptoms of computer vision syndrome and our team can help!

Computer vision syndrome occurs as a result of extended screen time, especially with devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops. As technology becomes a more common part of our day-to-day routines, it’s important to understand digital eye strain and how to combat its symptoms.

Does Computer Vision Syndrome Go Away?
Computer vision syndrome, or digital eye strain, is not permanent. Your symptoms should go away after a good break from your device.
The severity of your symptoms can depend on the amount of time you’re spending looking at a screen, as well as your computer set-up and the frequency of your screen usage.
If you experience symptoms of digital eye strain that don’t seem to go away, even after a long break, you should book an appointment with one of our knowledgeable CHROMA optometrists. Your symptoms may be related to another issue, such as an outdated prescription.

Treatments for Computer Vision Syndrome
Fortunately, there are many things you can do to help alleviate the symptoms of digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome.
Adjusting your workstation can help prevent symptoms of digital eye strain and reduce the stress on your eyes.
Whether it’s a home office or a company office, you can:
- Adjust your monitor to sit below eye level (4 – 5 inches lower)
- Set your monitor up 20 – 28 inches away from your face
- Use a document holder for any reference materials
- Put an anti-glare cover over your screen
- Ensure your screen isn’t brighter than the light in the room
- Sit so your feet are flat on the floor
- Use blue-light blocking glasses
The 20-20-20 Rule
You can practice the 20-20-20 rule to help alleviate and prevent symptoms of digital eye strain.
The 20-20-20 rule means every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and stare at something 20 feet away. This gives your eyes regular breaks to relax and allows your eyes to rehydrate.
Some more recent studies have found evidence to suggest that certain natural supplements can help treat symptoms of digital eye strain.
One study found that bilberry extract can help reduce strain on the eye muscles of people who frequently use visual displays. Another study found bilberry extract improved “the experience of eye fatigue” based on the participants’ responses.
